Lymphedema is a serious condition involving the accumulation of fluid in an area with compromised lymphatic drainage. As the condition progresses, treatment becomes progressively more complex and difficult. In recent years, kinesiology taping has become a successful part of early lymphedema treatment. Inexpensive and non-invasive, kinesio tape is now considered to be one of the most integral lymphedema products.
The basic configuration for lymphedema taping is called a fan cut. It consists of a strip of kinesiology tape divided into thin, lengthwise strips or "fingers." The tape is applied with a slight stretch over the area of swelling. A gentle lifting action is exerted on the skin, creating an area of negative pressure that enhances lymphatic drainage. Excess fluid is able to naturally drain away from the area of swelling.
There are several options available for kinesiology taping for edema and lymphedema. Traditionally, regular kinesiology tape rolls have been cut into the thin strips of a fan configuration. More recently, precut applications have become available, making edema taping much quicker and more convenient. These products vary in size, with applications now available to cover any area of the body.
